A research at Doshisha University in Kyoto has discovered that the Peruvian purple maize contains one of the most powerful antioxidants of the world, antocianina, which helps prevent cells degeneration in humans and mammals. It is also found in dark fruits such as grapes and blackberries among others.
The Japanese scientists fed a group of mice with junk food and other group with purple maize drink and purple maize pudding. After 84 days, the scientists found that the mice fed with food made of purple maize show changes in their cells and a higher level of insulin, these discoveries could help treat obesity and diabetes. According to the scientist Tomoyuki Shirai, the purple pigment from the Andean maize could also prevent colon cancer.
