Since the Spanish introduced the European harp in the then
Viceroyalty of Peru, the musical instrument has gone over significant changes
in its form and structure, due to adaptations made by the Peruvian natives. These
changes were made according to their artistic needs. The Peruvian harps differ
from each other in size and form; however, they all have a big resonance box. This
box produces sounds that travel far away over the dry and thin air of the
Andean altitudes.
When trekking over the Andes,
trekkers could listen to the sounds of music approaching as they walk, sounds
coming from far away valleys and mountains. Sometimes is a small band,
sometimes is a solo harpist, filling the air with wonderful Andean
rhythms.
