In order to improve the cultural experience of
visitors to the floating islands of the Uros in Lake
Titicaca , at 3810 m.a.s.l., the government has decided to reduce
the number of islands from fifty to thirty, where the biggest islands with the
largest population will remain on the site.
The Uros are native people that live on
man-made islands built with totora, a reed plant that grows in Lake Titicaca , which is also used to make their homes and
boats. The floating islands are 5 Km west from the city of Puno , around 20 minutes by boat. Most of the
Uros natives have moved to the mainland while a few hundred still live at the
islands and benefit from the tourism industry.
