Chicha, the Peruvian Cumbia, is a musical genre that's quite
popular in Peru. Originally, from the remote Peruvian Amazon, Chicha was
introduced in the coast city of Lima around the late 70s; a time when there was
a significant migration of indigenous people to the capital city.
Chicha is the result of a fusion of rhythms “…inspired by
the Colombian cumbias but incorporat[ing] the distinctive pentatonic scales of
Andean melodies, some Cuban guajiras, and the psychedelic sounds of surf
guitars, wah-wah pedals, farfisa organs, and moog synthesizers” (*).
After reaching Lima, the sounds of Chicha kept fusing, it
got the influence of rock, folk, and creole music. Consequently, new
instruments and melodies from other type of music enriched Chicha, which
enhanced its vibrant rhythms; sounds that induce people to dance wherever they
are.
