Train lovers now have more opportunities to experience one of the world’s most remarkable feats of engineering: the Andean Central Railroad, a train trip from Lima to Huancayo over the rugged and steep Andean Range. The train crosses 69 tunnels and 58 bridges in a fascinating 12 hours journey. Two trips per month, from March to November, have been added to the departure schedule since 2008.
The Central Railroad has 535 KM of tracks, and was built in the 1800s by a crew of 10,000 people; it is the highest railway in the Americas, and the second highest in the world. In the near future, the new tracks of “El Tren Macho” (The Macho Train) from Huancayo to Huancavelica will be ready for travelers to enjoy more of the Andeans by train.
