A religious temple was recently discovered in the region of Lambayeque, it may have belonged to the formative period of the Cupisnique culture (1500-1000 B.C.). A modeled image of a spider on a wall was found inside the structure, which may have been one of the first deities this people worshiped. The archaeological sites found in the area have major monumental architecture; they were built with mud, stone, and clay, among other materials and decorated with designs representing humans, animals, and mystical creatures.
