The Andean Baroque Route

When tourists in Peru travel from Cusco to Lake Titicaca, Puno, they pass by small towns that have an extraordinary treasure inside their churches: a rich collection of the unique Cusqueña School Art. Some travelers, aware of the cultural and historical attractions of these churches, stop for a few minutes to visit in their way to Puno. To offer tourists the opportunity for a longer visit to this area, a new full-day tourist route is being proposed in Cusco, which will also include visits to La Compañía de Jesus in Cusco city: The Andean Baroque Route.

The construction of La Compañía de Jesus began in 1576 on the place where Inca Huayna Capac’s palace was located. Its architecture is considered one of the best examples of colonial baroque in the Americas. Among the XVII-XVIII century temples in the south of Cusco that are been included in The Andean Baroque Route are, San Pedro  Apóstol de Andahuaylillas, San Juan Bautista in Huaro, and Virgen de la Candelaria de Kanincuna. These temples show the richness of the Andean baroque style and its relation with the identity and history of the people of the region.
